The prompt was Chair. So immediately I tried to push what that actually meant. This resulted in many odd shapes trying to steer away from your classic "chair" as best I could.  From here, I chose two designs to continue with. I was also to cre

More designs of the chosen two from the first batch. Again, I narrowed down designs I liked, and continued with those pieces.

One of the two directions I continued in revolved around these rounded triangles, completing the table in a rhombus shape. The planar material would have cutouts in specific shapes to catch the light.  1/8 scale model of a table.

I was inspired by the bold lines from confident sketches and wire sculptures. But these got messy easily, and I needed to find a way to simplify my design. 1/8th scale table model.

I made many models out of wire and paper to get the correct placement and design. By now, I knew I wanted to make a chair/table set that concisted of one continuous loop of wire, but figuring out how they were going to look was a puzzle. 1/8th s

While the shape of the table came easily, it took days of sketching to figure out chair that worked just as perfectly.

The final design. The wire loops together and creates volume through linear materials. The clear acrylic shows the innerworkings of the table and chair, although still needed to be edited at this stage.

Next step was to build.  Planning was the most important step. For this design, the material couldn't simply be bent like the models I had made. I mapped out each bend, measured each length, and kept careful notes on which of the 25 bends went

Each corner piece was bent, cut, and welded together to create the solid bent look of the design.

Each weld had to be meticulously ground flat to give the illusion that the metalwork was all one solid piece. Then after a quick powdercoat, I could install the acrylic table and seat tops and complete the design.

The wineglass was trickier to match to the design. I wanted to keep the continuous wire form for the stem, and the angled bottom of the glass called back to the bent acrylic of the tabletops.

The finished design, fully built.

This project closed with a final show at a local design firm. My cohort and I got to show off what we had been working hard for to our friends, family, and community.
