Made from a single sheet of plywood. Hand built for daycare. Mirrored tunnel for children.

These tunnels were built for the Bellingham Childcare and Learning Center with the intention that toddlers can crawl through the tunnels, experience how mirrors work, and learn to recognize their reflection. The angled sides of each of the sections

For this to work, each angle had to be carefully planned out and measured. I made models out of foamcore to ensure my idea would work, and made tweaks to ensure each piece fit together seamlessly.

Each piece of the tunnel had acrylic mirror panels facing inward and a frosted acrylic top. This ensured that adults could see if there was a child inside without losing the “tunnel” feel, as well as let in light from the classroom to prevent childr

The set comprised of three modular pieces that fit together, complete with matching primary colors on the outside.

Each piece comprised of thirteen wooden pieces, blued and buiscuted for stability. Stability was a big factor in my design, since this was a product for children.

Building these was definitly the hardest part of the concept. Each individual frame had to be carefully measured and cut to the exact angle or else the pieces would not fit together.

When I donated my pieces, I got the chance to observe my product in use with the kids. There are some details I would have liked to change if I had more time to work on this project, but overall seeing the tunnels used and enjoyed made me very proud
