What's the easiest way to measure food? You could use a measuring cup, but what if that's too messy? What if the heavy containers are too bulky to lug out and put back in your pantry? Shouldn't there be an better way? Partnered with Kayley King, we

The first step was drawings and prototypes. We each came up with a number of designs, and transformed our best ones into working models. Each model you see here accurately measured out one cup of food, although some worked better than others.

More models of our most successful route. We made many variations, trying to hone in on the accuracy and ease of the dispencing mechanism.

Our peers helped guide and shape our decisions as we continued with our designs. We presented to designers from Artefact, who sponsered this project and hosted our final presentation.

The new lid redesign was easier to operate, worked better than our old design, and much easier to understand. There was still a learning curve to our dispencer, but it was much smoother to use.

We put our 3D printer to work testing out grips for the sides, subtle direction cues, and adjustment knobs. One of the most important parts we had to test was the threads around the top of the clear container. The slightly-threaded section only allo

The knob on the top allows you to choose how much food you wanted to dispense at one time. This attached to a door on the inside of the lid, which let you dispense 1/4 of a cup up to 1 full cup. The lid also locked into place with the bottom segment

Divvy comes in three sizes. The large and medium sized lids are the same and interchangeable, where the small sized lid dispences teaspoons and tablespoons for spices or other smaller ingredients.

Along with storing and dispensing food, we still thought Divvy could do more. Cue the Arduino, which we programed with an infrared light sensor that we installed on the inside of the lid to measure the distance between the sensor and the food.

This would keep tabs on which food items you were running low on, the expiration dates, and nutritional info and send it all to the Divvy app on your smartphone.

The app had to be simple, yet readable. People wouldn't use this every day of their lives, but it had to be easy enough to glance at at a store and see just how much rice you have left in your pantry.  This app also stores nutritional by scanni
