      <image:caption>One of the things I like to do is challenge myself with different kinds of projects. Although working with paper has been my recent favorite, sewing and small-scale, detail oriented work always comes back into my projects. This time? Dollmaking.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I wanted to choose an outfit to replicate to the best of my abilities, the more intricate the better. For this project, I chose Nandor from the dark comedy TV show What We Do In The Shadows. Nandor, being a 757 year old vampire from the Ottoman Empire and not at all up-to-date with modern culture, always dresses in very ornate clothing. There were many outfits I would have liked to replicate from this show (and still might), but this one seemed like a good balance between detailed but scalable.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Artist</image:title>
      <image:caption>I have made and worked with patterns before through cosplay and fashion projects, so translating to doll clothing wasn’t too much of a stretch. I included seam allowance in all of my patterns.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63765efe2ec91d212435f899/1668701997360-RH8AJVJNIYZMVTGQ165L/20191119_175115.jpg</image:loc>

      <image:caption>After planning out the patterns, I made a test run in white fabric to see if they would fit my doll base.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Artist</image:title>
      <image:caption>I was glad I did this, there were a few changes to the shirt and the cape that definitely needed adjusting. This way I could get the correct length of the sleeves and really exaggerate the length of the cape.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63765efe2ec91d212435f899/1668701997399-4DCACQJ3377CQK2TKO86/20200210_094808.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Artist</image:title>
      <image:caption>My ideal design was to make the shirt clasps out of the same material as the shirt, complete with small metal loops to emulate the buckles, but I had a lot of issues attaching the fabric to itself. It was too small of a detail to hand-sew, but no glues would stick to the pleather of the shirt without falling off a day later. I did many tests to try these options out before applying it to my final shirt. In the end, I used the smallest size of eyelet hooks I could find and the loopy metalwork worked well as a substitute.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63765efe2ec91d212435f899/1668701997389-FRI37E2WUIOGQWH2K9B2/20200210_094758.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Artist</image:title>
      <image:caption>The details were the most fun and also the most frustrating part of the project. I ended up making two capes of the final fabric, since I figured out how to get a cleaner, straighter seam due to how the gold inner lining was folded out. Then I hand-sewed each metal decoration onto the front of the cape, the metal crosses fashioned out of beading caps cut from floral shapes into cross shapes.</image:caption>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63765efe2ec91d212435f899/1668701997351-3LO8W3TVUHUYRCYQ6FQL/IMG_0071.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Artist</image:title>
      <image:caption>All in all, I was happy with how this came out. I look forward to doing more dollmaking, more detail oriented sewing projects, and learning the craft more and more as I go.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The prompt was Chair. So immediately I tried to push what that actually meant. This resulted in many odd shapes trying to steer away from your classic "chair" as best I could. From here, I chose two designs to continue with. I was also to create a table and wineglass to go with my final chair design.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I was inspired by the bold lines from confident sketches and wire sculptures. But these got messy easily, and I needed to find a way to simplify my design. 1/8th scale table model.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>I made many models out of wire and paper to get the correct placement and design. By now, I knew I wanted to make a chair/table set that concisted of one continuous loop of wire, but figuring out how they were going to look was a puzzle.   1/8th scale chair models.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>The two semi-final designs. For the triangle-driven design, I went with a solid volumous chair and a light simple table with some volumes. For the wire design, the table worked well but the chair was still to busy. The chair had to have the same casual, simple feel that the table did. 1/4 scale chair/table models.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>While the shape of the table came easily, it took days of sketching to figure out chair that worked just as perfectly.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>The final design. The wire loops together and creates volume through linear materials. The clear acrylic shows the innerworkings of the table and chair, although still needed to be edited at this stage.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>Next step was to build. Planning was the most important step. For this design, the material couldn't simply be bent like the models I had made. I mapped out each bend, measured each length, and kept careful notes on which of the 25 bends went where.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63765efe2ec91d212435f899/1668702045881-AOV6VM617WP94ABS95Q8/IMAG1304a.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>Each corner piece was bent, cut, and welded together to create the solid bent look of the design.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>Each weld had to be meticulously ground flat to give the illusion that the metalwork was all one solid piece. Then after a quick powdercoat, I could install the acrylic table and seat tops and complete the design.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>The wineglass was trickier to match to the design. I wanted to keep the continuous wire form for the stem, and the angled bottom of the glass called back to the bent acrylic of the tabletops.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>These tunnels were built for the Bellingham Childcare and Learning Center with the intention that toddlers can crawl through the tunnels, experience how mirrors work, and learn to recognize their reflection. The angled sides of each of the sections allow them to fit together to create many different combinations of tunnel shapes. This projects challenge was to make a children’s toy out of a single sheet of plywood.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>For this to work, each angle had to be carefully planned out and measured. I made models out of foamcore to ensure my idea would work, and made tweaks to ensure each piece fit together seamlessly.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Each piece of the tunnel had acrylic mirror panels facing inward and a frosted acrylic top. <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>Building these was definitly the hardest part of the concept. Each individual frame had to be carefully measured and cut to the exact angle or else the pieces would not fit together.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>When I donated my pieces, I got the chance to observe my product in use with the kids. There are some details I would have liked to change if I had more time to work on this project, but overall seeing the tunnels used and enjoyed made me very proud of the work and thought put into this project.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>What's the easiest way to measure food? You could use a measuring cup, but what if that's too messy? What if the heavy containers are too bulky to lug out and put back in your pantry? Shouldn't there be an better way? Partnered with Kayley King, we set out to explore this dillema and find a solution.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>The first step was drawings and prototypes. We each came up with a number of designs, and transformed our best ones into working models. Each model you see here accurately measured out one cup of food, although some worked better than others.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The new lid redesign was easier to operate, worked better than our old design, and much easier to understand. There was still a learning curve to our dispencer, but it was much smoother to use.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>We put our 3D printer to work testing out grips for the sides, subtle direction cues, and adjustment knobs. One of the most important parts we had to test was the threads around the top of the clear container. The slightly-threaded section only allowed the lid to turn in one direction, and if the other direction were to be turned, it would lock into place and seal the food from getting stale.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The knob on the top allows you to choose how much food you wanted to dispense at one time. This attached to a door on the inside of the lid, which let you dispense 1/4 of a cup up to 1 full cup. The lid also locked into place with the bottom segment of the container for easy stacking.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Along with storing and dispensing food, we still thought Divvy could do more. Cue the Arduino, which we programed with an infrared light sensor that we installed on the inside of the lid to measure the distance between the sensor and the food.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Searching for material was surprisingly difficult. It was hard to tell what some materials were even composed of, and since we were working with pets, everything had to be safe enough for a dog or cat to chew on. <image:caption>As a challenge to myself, I made three different bags soley out of scrap material donated from various sourses. Most of the fabric used was canvas from a local industrial sewing company specializing in marine fabrics.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>This was the first bag, and the most impromptu. The fabric used for this bag came in a thick strip with two kinds of fabric already sewn into it. It imidiately made me think of a messenger bag, and soon after I was planning out the patterns to make it. This bag features a cross-body strap that connects the bag at the top left corner and the bottom right. This allows you to wear it in two ways: cross body or vertical.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>The red fabric scraps I wanted to use for this bag was already cut into identical trangular pieces. This drove the design to become a simple drawstring bag with a triangular pouch. The back pieces was made from two seperate pieces since I didn't have a solid piece big enough.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Industrial Designer</image:title>
      <image:caption>After the messanger bag, I wasnted to make a more traditinal backpack. This fabric is blue on one side and black on the other, which allowed me to use two colors but keep the concistancy of the fabric. Every strap, interfacing, and hem is made from this same fabric.</image:caption>
